CCAA Hip Score Database

PennHip

PennHip is a method by which the laxity in a dog’s hips are measured and scored according to other dogs in that breed. Some breeds, including the Cane Corso, have more tolerance than other breeds to laxity and that is why each breed is assigned a median and no dog is listed as “pass or fail”. Each hip is scored separately but the larger score of the two determines the placement in the database. As of 2009, the average Corso Laxity or median score is 0.62. That means any Corso with a score of 0.62 has average hips for the breed at that time; the smaller the number, the tighter the hip. According to research the odds of a dog developing hip Dysplasia goes down when laxity is deceased.

Percentiles are based on the laxity of the breed as a whole. It varies based on how many Corsos are entered into the database that are above or below the average for the breed. Example: If a dog comes back in the 80% that means it scored better than 80 percent of the dogs that have been scored to date. One should note that the same number can sometimes reflect different percentiles. This is caused by a significant number of tighter or looser hips submitted to the database after that dog has been scored.

At this time the CCAA recommends that breeders use dogs with hips that score at the median (50%) or better without the presents of DJD. Below is a list of Corsos that have been submitted by members of the CCAA. It is NOT a complete record of the PennHip Database.
